The size of a bolt is typically measured in inches or millimetres. Inches are the most common measurement, and millimetres are used more often for bolts that are smaller in size. The two measurements are not interchangeable, so it is important to use the correct unit when measuring a bolt’s size.

    Inch Measurement:

Most bolts are measured in inches, which is denoted by the number “1” followed by either an “in” abbreviation (e.g. 1in) or the word “inches” (e.g. 1 inch). The number following the “1” indicates how many inches long the bolt is. So, a bolt that is labelled as 1in x 2-1/2in would be 1 inch long and have a diameter of 2-1/2 inches.

    Millimetre Measurement:

Bolts that are less than 1 inch in size are typically measured in millimetres instead of inches. Millimetres are denoted by the letter “mm” followed by a number (e.g. 6mm). Just like with inches, the number after mm indicates how many millimetres long the bolt is.
